Instead of relying solely on conventional data points, AI-based credit scoring models analyse a far broader spectrum—ranging from transaction patterns, mobile phone usage, e-commerce activity, utility payments, to even social behaviour metrics, depending on regulatory allowances. This breadth enables the inclusion of individuals traditionally excluded from the credit system: gig workers, informal sector earners, new-to-credit individuals, and others without a formal credit trail.

 

The fundamental innovation lies in machine learning’s capacity to detect non-obvious patterns. A traditional model might penalise an applicant with no previous loans, interpreting the absence of history as risk. Financial institutions must tread carefully, ensuring that data collection is consent-based, purpose-driven, and aligned with emerging privacy regulations.
